12 Apr Ceres Negros, Global Cebu star in contrasting AFC Cup results
Philippines Football League (PFL) clubs Ceres Negros FC and Global Cebu FC starred in contrasting results in their separate matches in the group stage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup on Wednesday, 11 April.
PFL Titleholders and ASEAN Zone Champions Ceres Negros took home their second straight victory against Boeung Ket Angkor FC of Cambodia, 4-0, at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
The Busmen relied on the hat-trick by Spanish Striker Bienvenido Maranon to clinch their second lopsided win over their Cambodian foes while Japanese forward Takumi Uesato added a goal of his own in the 84th minute.
With the win, Ceres Negros now sits on the top spot of Group F with 13 points on four wins and a draw with just a game remaining against Singapore’s Home United FC on 25 April at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.
Meanwhile, the late game surge of Global Cebu FC forced a 3-3 draw against Vietnamese side FLC Thanh Hoa FC at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.
Global Cebu’s trio of foreign reinforcement headlined for the Filipino club with Rufo Sanchez of Spain hitting the back of the net in the sixth minute while Trinidadian Darryl Roberts and Brazilian Wesley Dos Santos bagged goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes, respectively.
The club from Cebu is now tied with fellow Group G clubs Bali United FC and FLC Thanh Hoa with five points on their card and will play their final match in the elimination round against Bali at the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium on 25 April.
