Global Cebu escapes Yangon United in Manila

Philippines Football League (PFL) club Global Cebu FC escaped Myanmar’s Yangon United FC, 2-1, in their 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup group stage encounter at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Tuesday, 13 March.

Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez delivered the winning goal for the club from Cebu with a conversion from the penalty spot in the final minute of stoppage time in the second half.

Last year’s PFL runners up controlled the match in the early minutes of the affair and was able to break the scoreless deadlock in the 79th minute courtesy of the header by Darryl Roberts.

However, Yangon United managed to level the score in the 90th minute with Maung Lwin taking a header of his own deep inside the territory of their hosts.

With time winding down on the match, the attacking Sanchez was tackled by Yangon United defender Kekere Moukailou, giving Global Cebu a chance to seal the win from the penalty spot.

Despite the victory, Global Cebu still sits on the bottom of Group G with four points on a 1-1-2 win-draw-loss card and a one-point deficit on goal difference against third seeds FLC Thanh Hoa FC of Vietnam.
