30 Sep Match Preview: Kaya FC Makati vs FC Meralco Manla
Another chapter is set to unfold in the Kaya FC Makati-FC Meralco Manila rivalry this Saturday at the University of Makati Stadium.
The 4:00 PM kickoff will see a top of the table clase as pacesetters Meralco and Kaya lock horns as the race for the top two spots intensifies.
“These derby games are the matches everyone enjoys,” said Kaya midfielder Anton Ugarte when asked about the signifance of the Kaya-Meralco rivalry. “With Kaya and Meralco, for sure there will be something interesting happening.”
Kaya ended Stallion Laguna’s win streak with a 4-0 win last Saturday, while Meralco kept Davao Aguilas winless with a 2-0 win. Manila have the upper hand in their head-to-head with two wins against Makati.
Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida stated that the match will be a test of consistency for both sides. Makati are on a two-game winning streak heading to the match and were given a boost as Miguel Tanton is set to make his first start after a cameo appearance against Stallion. where he scored a looping ball near the half-way line.
“The intensity in training (for the Meralco match) has been high and morale is good,” said Marcaida. “Meralco have been very consistent. Aris (Caslib) has been able to organize the structure defensively.”
Meralco coach Aris Caslib will have skipper Simon Greatwich back in the lineup after serving his suspension against Davao. However, with the absence of Milan Nikolic due to suspension, the Sparks coach will have to adjust to Kaya’s style of play.
“It will be all about checking Kaya (in midfield),” said Caslib who has Anto Gonzales and Daniel Gadia at his disposal in midfield aside from Greatwich. “We need to stop the supply of balls to (Jordan) Mintah and then we should be able to manage.”
Defender Tyler Matas was asked on the key matchup of the match and had a simple reply: “Whoever is on my side, I will mark him with everything I’ve got.”
