FC MERALCO MANILA FACES NEW-LOOK DAVAO IN TAGUM

The Sparks play Davao Aguilas in the Davao Del Norte Sports Complex for the second time in this Philippines Football League season on Saturday, July 29. Kickoff will be at 4:00pm.

This will be the third meeting between the two clubs this year. Manila defeated Davao 2-0 in Rizal Memorial before being held to a 2-2 draw here in Tagum.

Meralco will be without centerback Joaco Cañas, who is suspended on accumulated yellows. But the side do welcome back mid Daniel Gadia and goalie Ace Villanueva, who return from international duty with the U22 national team in Cambodia.

Davao have been busy in the ongoing transfer window with several high profile acquisitions, namely Jason De Jong from Ceres and two new signings from Global Cebu, Matt Hartmann and Nick O’Donnell. 6’5″ Aussie striker Harrison Sawyer is yet another addition to Gary Phillips’ roster.

Manila are second in the table on 24 points, two off the pace set by Kaya Makati. In their last game on July 22 the Sparks drew Cebu 2-2 in an exciting contest in Rizal Memorial.

Sparks coach Aris Caslib will look to his captain James Younghusband and his brother Phil, the team’s all-time leading scorer, to deny the home side their first-ever PFL win. Davao has drawn five of their eleven assignments and currently sit seventh in the eight-team table.

This is the first of a grueling stretch of three matches in eight days for the capital club, who entertain Global on Wednesday in Rizal Memorial before hosting Kaya next Saturday.
